See G.P. recover walking and running after FND
Overview: Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a debilitating neurological condition with an estimated prevalence of 10 to 22 cases per 100,000 people. Rather than a structural issue, FND is caused by a functional disruption in how the brain sends and receives signals to the rest of the body. This disruption is typically triggered by a combination of physical and psychological stressors.
Patients with FND present with a wide array of symptoms, including movement dysfunction, sensory alterations, and tremors. Because these symptoms are involuntary and cannot be consciously controlled, they can emerge suddenly and fluctuate significantly in severity. Treatment for FND is multidisciplinary, of which physical therapy plays a crucial role in restoring faulty signaling patterns to return to normal movement and function.
Physical therapy for FND is highly individualized and unique to the person. Strategies focus on sensory modulation techniques that assist with cortical re-mapping for relearning movements. By changing how your brain processes sensory information, we can actually help remap your neural pathways thus allowing you to successfully relearn and reclaim natural, healthy movements.
FND Success Story
“Justine is truly the best, and she has been the biggest blessing in my recovery story. I started working with Justine after being diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) in early June. I was in the hospital for 6 days and then transferred to an acute rehabilitation center for an additional 12 days. I have been an athlete my entire life and played soccer in college, so suddenly having my brain and nervous system send and receive signals differently, affecting my movement, sensation, coordination, and so many other functions, I was completely terrified and devastated.
From the very beginning, Justine understood not only my FND, but she understood me in a way I could not have explained to anyone else. She knew HOW to help. While I am grateful for my time spent in the rehabilitation center...I wish I had found Justine and Matt before that, because they really have changed my outcome. Justine taught me to trust my body again; she is incredibly intelligent and knowledgeable about FND (which is really hard to find). She can explain everything in a way that you can really understand what is going on internally. But what is so special about Audia PT is that Justine and Matt genuinely care about their patients. I have primarily been working with Justine, but Matt has gone above and beyond in helping find doctors to add to my healthcare team. Just so supportive and so helpful!
When I first started with Justine about 9 weeks ago, I was using a wheelchair and walker. At the VERY first appointment, I WALKED out of the building to the car, no walker and no wheelchair.
In just a little over two months, I have gone from being in a wheelchair to walking, to running with minimal to ZERO tremors and/or symptoms. I can confidently say I would not be in the position I am today without the guidance and support from Audia Therapy. Justine hasn’t just helped my progress physically, but she has helped rebuild my confidence in myself to believe I can return to my new normal. She has pushed me, and we have laughed and had fun too!”
